Report on Building Layout: St Ambrose Barlow
Last week my class and I walked around our school and made notes on appearance, accessibility, functions and space. We did this so when we are making our building we know what and how to make it look nice and make it accessible for people with disabilities.
Front Entrance
The front entrance is very nice to look at due to the grass areas and the front of the school. However, looking nice does come with some consequences; one of them being space. The car park at the front is small and visitors aren't allowed to park there so the grass could have been removed for more car parking. Due to the lack of parking, staff and visitors have to park in the main car park on the main road which isn't too bad, but it is a long way to walk to get to the reception. When you walk through the gate the first thing that catches your eye is the beautiful stain glass window which is at the heart of the school. This is a good place for it because it shows the visitors that we are Christians.
Reception
The reception looks nice and isn't filled with unnecessary items. It is the first room from the entrance which is good because it’s easily accessed and it’s the entrance to the 6th form. Also it is where the elevator is; this is good because it isn't hidden, it can be easily found. However, there is a toilet right at the entrance which is good in case you need to go, but it isn't one of the nicest and cleanest things to see in the first room.
Class Rooms
To the right of the entrance is where the DT, Art and kitchen are and they need a lot of deliveries. So, to make it easier there is a road to the side of the building is a road so the delivery men don’t have to walk all the way through the school. However, other rooms that need deliveries like science and food technology are on the upper floors which are bad because it would be tricky to carry it up there. Luckily, there is an elevator which would make it much easier.
In the heart of the building is a big open space with an open computer room at the bottom and open rooms that overlook it on the different floors. In my opinion this is a nice design and looks a lot nicer than using that space for extra rooms. However, with having St Georges come to our school using that space for extra class rooms would have saved money because we wouldn't have had to build the extension. Also, because it’s open there is a lot of noise which could distract people from work.
Canteen
The canteen needs to be big because we have a lot of pupils in each year and two year groups share their dinner time. Unfortunately, our canteen is very small so we have to eat fast to be able to get everyone in. This means that there is no space to stay inside when you are done eating even when the weather is horrible. It would be a lot better and easier for the staff if there is a large outdoor shelter that we could sit under if the weather was bad, or even if it is really sunny.
